University Resources
Finding effective treatment for a student in your care can often be a challenging process. Whether this is the first time a student is seeking help, or an individual with an eating disorder history, college students often report feeling quite overwhelmed during this time. However, it's important for them to know that many treatment options are available. It is imperative that students be very proactive in finding the best treatment option quickly, as research clearly indicates that early and aggressive treatment results in improved outcomes for those struggling with this illness. To guide university staff in securing treatment for their students, HRS has developed a comprehensive directory of eating disorder resources nationwide. And in those cases where a higher level of care is warranted, this directory also includes information on residential treatment facilities throughout the country. HRS has also begun to create both campus awareness materials and other resources which can guide university staff seeking additional ways their community can best support students with body image and/or eating concerns. βIt means so much to students to have eating disorder awareness events on campus. These events give two powerfully healing messages. One is, 'You are not alone.' The other is, 'We care deeply about you.' Working with Dawn to plan a major community event at our university helped support the students who face these issues, their friends and loved ones, as well as the staff who care for them. Dawn is a wonderful, skillful, thoughtful partner for eating and body image awareness events.β β Susanna (Zan) Barry, college health education and outreach
