Identifying and Assessing Eating Disorders in Adolescents/Young Adults
A new study estimates that approximately a half million teens struggle with eating disorders or disordered eating, with the average age of onset being 12-13. Recognizing that anorexia has the highest mortality rate of all psychiatric disorders, it is critical for those in the medical and behavioral health fields to know the signs and symptoms as well as the risk factors for these deadly diseases. Given the young age of onset, early intervention is crucial. In this presentation, Dr. Kim Dennis will discuss the detection of eating disorders in this specific patient population, share assessment tools and strategies, and provide treatment options. A case study will also be reviewed.

Work Hard, Play Hard, Recover Hard?: Determining Level of Care
and Treatment Plans for Adolescents/Young Adults
Eating disorders typically begin in adolescence. By the time a teenager is admitted to college, he/she will join a campus where 10-20% of women and 4-10% of men meet criteria for an eating disorder. Only 1 in 10 individuals will receive treatment for their eating disorder, and of those individuals, only 35% will be treated at a specialized facility. Often times, students do not willingly seek treatment and schools, colleges and universities might not recognize how dire the issue is until the student needs a higher level of care and needs to take time off. This presentation will discuss steps we can take to engage and empower the adolescent/young adult population to seek resources or treatment prior to needing acute care or having to leave school.

Coping with Chaos: Eating Disorders, Self-Harm and Suicidal Behaviors
in Adolescents and Young Adults
Adolescents with both eating disorders and self-injury pose difficult challenges for mental health professionals. This workshop will provide an up-to-date, comprehensive research review to help understand the prevalence of self-injury in teens and the dynamic relationship between self-injury and eating disorders. Co-morbid diagnosis including behavioral patterns and personality traits that accompany this unique population will be discussed. Case examples, tools, and assignments will be demonstrated to provide attendees practical methods to use with their clients.

When Eating Disorders and Substance Abuse Collide: Maintaining Recovery
Eating disorders and substance abuse both pose significant risk for adolescents and young adults; that risk can be exacerbated when the two diagnoses present simultaneously. This presentation will discuss the challenges with addressing both diagnoses, and nuances in respective treatment models. Additionally, we will provide a model for a collaborative, holistic approach to recovery in the context of a case presentation.

Empowering Parents of Individuals with Eating Disorders
Eating disorders impact the whole family. Parents play a key role in supporting their child’s journey to wellness from symptom detection and diagnosis, facilitation of access to care, engagement in treatment, to relapse prevention. Parents’ involvement may look different depending on the child’s developmental level, but the thread of promoting healthy growth carries throughout. Integrated principles of treatment models including family-based treatment, Off the CUFF, and Succeed are presented.

This presentation will discuss the essential components of a successful re-entry plan. The discussion of components will include academic, mental health and medical care, living situation, and food management. The importance and challenges of collaboration among professionals in different settings will be explored.
